Day 31: Next Steps: Putting Yourself Out There Companion Course Preview!!

Hi Everyone!  Thanks for being here with me at the end of this glorious month of Handmade U Conversations!  Can you believe it is the end of August?!  I can't believe this month has flown by so quickly.

We are deep in the process of getting ready for our Handmade U Fall Semester!  The ladies will be here in just over a week! YIKES!  Final details are being worked through and cobwebs are coming down in the Big Red Barn:)

I have to take a few moments though to talk about what the month of Putting Yourself Out There videos have meant to me, and what I've heard they've meant to many of you that have commented and shared your thoughts with me and the ladies who I chatted with.

I can't thank the women enough that took the time to chat with me, Put Themselves Out There as it is, and share their stories and experiences to provide us with inspiration and encouragement for us to do the same.  Do you see that we are all the same?  We are all just at different points in our journeys, but we ALL start with the first step, and we only get where we want to go if we keep taking those steps, whether they are baby steps or giant leaps!  The point is forward momentum is a good thing.

I have a whole journal full of notes that I took on these conversations.  I have gone back over them time and again throughout the month and been inspired.  I started thinking about digging deeper into how and why I put myself out there, and what more I can do to raise the bar and keep reaching towards bigger goals.

That is why I decided to put together the Putting Yourself Out There Companion Online Course!  I hope you will join me!  You'll make a simple, fun, inexpensive journal to hold all your notes and all your thoughts on the Journaling Prompts that I provide.  The prompts will have you digging deep on this topic, and getting your momentum going to catapult you towards your dreams and goals.

The Handmade U Conversations remain on my Public Blog, but I will provide you with a handy reference of links to each one to make sure you didn't miss anything.  Also you will have a couple handfuls of How-To Videos, quick and to the point, to learn how to make this journal, and where to find all the supplies easily to make it.

The Introductory Cost of the course will be $29 in September.  If you sign up below for the Handmade U Newsletter you will receive a discount code for $4 off.  Watch for the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT and Link to sign up VERY SOON!!  Once you sign up, you'll be included in the Private Facebook Group to circle around with this Tribe to support and encourage each other with the project, but more importantly with stepping into your goals in Putting Yourself Out There!

Take a peek at a teaser!

Day 30: Putting Yourself Out There with Melody Ross

I'm excited to share our last Putting Yourself Out There Conversation today.

Melody Ross has been putting herself out there for years.  She has used her life experiences to develop tools and courses that have been life changing for her, and thousand of other women. Melody is co-founder of Brave Girls Club. She has some exciting new things happening over there at BGC. Soul Restoration, their flagship class is being rebooted and begins Sept 7th. It is going to be so good, this is soul work, it's been so life-changing for me, and thousands of others. If you are feeling called to take it, it will be available on Brave Girls' University, you can sign up through my link below! You won't regret it, I promise you if you put in the effort you'll find amazing things on the other side.

Come take a listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Melody Ross from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

So there were so many things to take to heart!  Consider how much you care about what people think of you, and how is that affecting the way you put yourself out there?  How can this not be a blocker to you being you?  As Melody said, it's an evolution and over time that feeling of caring too much can change.  Think about small steps you can make to let some of that go.

Think about your why, why do you want to put yourself out there, what do you have to share and is it worth doing?

It's ok if people don't like what you are doing, or even don't like you.  As Melody reminded us, there are 3 billion women in the world!!  If a few aren't your Cup of Tea find a few others!  Thanks Melody, that is a great reminder and helps put things in perspective.

We talked a lot about the mean people, the haters, and I think this is a great conversation to end on wrapping up what to do about those people, and the fears of this happening to you.  We've said it before and Melody confirms, expect these things to happen in some way or another.  It will help you not be blindsided, and you can remember why you are doing what you are, and who is always supporting you no matter what.

I can't wait for Melody to create the When in Doubt class - what a great idea to have a whole book of those reminders.  In the meantime a few of those ideas will be included in the companion course for these conversations.  Who are those that support you most?  Why do you want to put yourself out there, and what goals are you heading towards?  Remembering those things will keep you going when you stumble or run into one of those mean people.

As Melody said, we are REAL People, we ALL have feelings.  Let's be KIND to each other as we all navigate how we are putting ourselves out there.  When we run across someone that isn't our cup of tea, just move on, when we see someone we care about needing support or constructive criticism, let's do it lovingly.

And I'll leave you with what Melody suggests.  You have the medicine that someone else needs.  You do.

Now go be creative!

Day 29: Putting Yourself Out There with Charlotte Lyons

This morning let's play a game of pretend.  Let's pretend it is yesterday and that you are reading this then ;)  Thanks for your patience as this little video was difficult and sassy about getting pieced together and loaded.  So I learned a bit about iMovie, though I have more to learn I'm happy to share this video with you.  You'll get to see Charlotte Lyons and hear me too.  I promise I'm there just a little cut off ;)  I figure you've seen quite a bit of me this month anyway right?! ;)

Now to the important stuff!  Charlotte Lyons designs and makes things in a variety of styles and media. Still inspired by the humble simplicity of traditional art and craft and the inventive use of repurposed materials, Charlotte aims to mix an unfussy playfulness with the vintage charm of handmade keepsakes.

Over the years, her work has been featured in her books (Mothers and Daughters at Home, Between Friends), those with Mary Engelbreit and Barbara Martin and also in magazines such as Country Living, Victoria, Woman’s Day, Better Homes and Gardens and Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion. Currently, she designs for licensing, her Etsy shop and teaches workshops nationally.

Charlottelyons.com

Come take a listen:

Putting Yourself Out There with Charlotte Lyons from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Thanks to Charlotte for sharing her perspective of how things have changed over the years.  From sitting on your stoop chatting with neighbors, to posting things online, we really have changed the face of what is possible in putting yourself out there to a much larger front porch as Charlotte described.  As she put it, you'll be alone if you don't put yourself out there is some ways.

The ideas of sharing your gifts and teaming up with friends is a great one.  I always enjoy having a friend to encourage me along and for me to do the same for her.  Find someone who you can team up with if you need some extra nudges!

Be sure to along the way build your community that will lift you up when you need it, will encourage you along, and perhaps even push you to finally get out of your comfort zone and moved into a new exciting time in your life!

Thanks Charlotte for sharing your story!!

Now go be creative!

Day 28: Putting Yourself Out There with Cori Spieker

Hi Everyone!

In under the wire I wanted to share our Sunday Handmade U Conversation with the very inspiring Cori Spieker, otherwise known as The Reset Girl on social media.

In her words:
"I’m Cori Spieker and am known on social media as The Reset Girl. I gave myself that name when life’s circumstances offered me the option to push the reset button and start over. And what a blessing that decision has been. In this exciting chapter of my life, I am a passionate planner girl, inspiring thousands of other planner girls on my Instagram and YouTube channels with my photos, tips, encouraging messages and how to videos. I am the creator and hostess of the ListersGottaList challenge on Instagram, a creative activity that over 15,000 people participate in each month. I also recently launched a wonderful planner and scrapbook collection as a collaboration with Simple Stories. In addition, my new husband and I are accidental entrepreneurs, running The Reset Girl Shop together and supplying the planner community with beautiful and original planner stickers and decorating kits that make planning a form of creative expression. Encouraging women to use their creative gifts is my passion."

Find Cori on her website linked above, IG @theresetgirl and Facebook here at theresetgirl

Come take a listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Cori Spieker from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

I find it so inspiring when you chat with someone who is living their passion and doing so well at it, and hear their backstory.  Hear about what their Day 1 was like, when they decided to participate in something they loved, only to have it turn into a life changing moment.

What if your step into sharing your gifts, doing what you love could change your life?  Would you do it?  How will you know if it could if you don't try?

How many of us view pictures on blogs, or IG and think our lives couldn't compare with those people, who would want to see what we have going on?  By finding something you love, and searching out a community of like-minded souls you may find that there are people who are waiting for you to join in and participate.

As Cori described, we all have our own perspective and way to do things that will inspire others.  Keep in mind too that others that we see out there have been working for years learning the skills to do what they are doing.  But they started with no skills too, and they started.

What can you start today?  Keep Perfection in it's place and give yourself Grace.

Thanks so much Cori for joining us and inspiring everyone!

Now go be creative!

Day 27: Putting Yourself Out There with Rachel McGough (Me!)

Oh how the tables have turned!!

Thanks to Vikki Spencer the Mom Whisperer for putting me in the hot seat today.  We had a great chat about my story on Putting Myself Out There and how I came to create these conversations.

Come take a listen!

Rachel McGough on Putting Yourself Out There from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

It wasn't very painful!  Thanks to Vikki's guiding we had the chance to chat about how your own desires can lead you to put yourself out there which in turn allows you to share what you are passionate about with others.  What about rejection?  Can we turn it around and not take it personally when others make different choices?  Keep doing your best to put yourself out there and show people who you are, show them what you do so that when they have another chance to make a decision perhaps they'll choose to join you in your passions!

I'm getting so anxious to share with you my Putting Yourself Out There Companion Course!  You'll be able to dig deep into all these concepts and push yourself out of your comfort zone, and learn how to survive and thrive while doing it!  It's coming soon...just a little more work and it'll be ready early September!!

Now go be creative!

Day 26: Putting Yourself Out There with Kelli May Krenz

TGIF!

Happy Friday Everyone!  Hoping you made it through the week with gusto and as few bumps and bruises as possible.  I am happy to share my conversation with the always charming and fun Kelli May-Krenz.

Kelli lives with her supportive husband and sweet puppy Pearl Button, who is the namesake for her business! Kelli is a creator, graphic designer, artist, Brave Girls University teacher, and sweet colorful soul.  Please go check her beautiful greeting cards out on her website!  So talented! Be inspired!

You can find Kelli lots of places!
IG @kellimaykrenz
www.kellimaykrenz.com
Her Blog: www.heresanotherwayoflookingatit.blogspot.com
On FB @pearlbutton

Come take a peek:

Putting Yourself Out There with Kelli May-Krenz from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

One of the many things I admire about Kelli is that she is consistent, she tries to create every day and she shares that with us.  I love seeing what she is up to each day, and it always inspires me and makes me want to go create as well.  She just shows up as she puts it, even on those days she might feel frazzled, she shows up and is seen.

Her belief that if she is authentic, real and open she will draw in those like-minded souls is a good one.  Be yourself, you want those who connect with the real you to find you, not those expecting someone else.

Sometimes we get stuck in not knowing what to share, what to put out there.  Kelli has great advice that when you see a need that needs to be filled and you feel called to fill it, that is what you can do to start putting yourself out there.  Also the fact that when you put positivity into the world over and over, you start to believe it, even if you might not have in the beginning.  So be a light for yourself and others.

Finally, something I am going to do ASAP is a vision board of a goal.  Here is one that Kelli did to get herself published!  It worked over and over.  Great job!  Thanks Kelli for all the great bits of wisdom and practical advice!

Now go be creative!

Day 25: Putting Yourself Out There with Sherri Welser

Welcome to our Handmade U conversation today with Sherri Welser.

Sherri Welser is a mixed media artist and jewelry artisan who combines wonderful textures ,vibrant colors and inspirational messages in her work.  She is located in the Fingerlakes Region of NY State and has been featured in many national magazines including Somerset studio and Jewelry Affair to name a few. She also hosts Art Retreats and just recently hosted her latest retreat " Art Of A Gypsy" in her new art studio in the woods.

You can find her on IG @wildheartart
and FB @WildHeartartSherri

Also her website www.indigoearth.artfire.com

Come listen to her story, it is such a lesson in using tragedy to put ourselves out there to help others.

Putting Yourself Out There with Sherri Welser from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

We all go through things, have loss, tragedies, struggles and challenges in our lives.  How many of us use these experiences to help others?  How many of us put ourselves out there to share those stories in hopes of helping others.  This might not be for everyone, but consider this, perhaps sharing your story, using your experience to help others can be healing and helpful for yourself too.

Also consider that putting yourself out there in small ways just to connect with people.  Ask about the stories behind people's tattoos like Sherri's Mom does!  What a fun way to make a connection with people!  There are people that need to say things and people that need to hear those things as Sherri put it, so true.  Which are you?!  Or maybe you are both!

I love Sherri's point that Everyone has the ability to change a life in by doing small things.

Make those connections, just show up.  If you have experienced a loss of a child and want to reach out to Sherri to receive more information on her upcoming retreat for those who have, use the connects above to find her!  Thanks Sherri for what you put into the world!

Now go be creative!

Day 24: Putting Yourself Out There with Vikki Spencer

Hi All!!

I am always so happy to share one of my conversations with you all!  Today even more so because of two things, #1 - because I had to sit in front of Menards to upload this baby because our internet at home was so not working for me today, but thanks for a good cell connection and a hotspot, and #2 - because I am chatting with one of my favs, Vikki Spencer.  (more excited about #2 of course!)

Vikki Spencer is a mom coach, speaker and author inspiring women from every stage in motherhood to be their most phenomenal. A former high school teacher, she teaches moms to create lives and families that flow with passion and purpose. She calls them to use their emotional, mental, and spiritual resources to learn about themselves then intentionally care for and influence their families.
Vikki also wrote the book Momifesto; 9 Practices for Phenomenal Moms and you can find her online at www.themomwhisperer.com

Our conversation is a little longer than most, we could have gone all day, really we could have.... While re-watching to take my notes I filled up 3 pages! That is one, two, three. Just so much good stuff.

Grab a tea and join us!

Putting Yourself Out There with Vikki Spencer from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Ok where do I start??  I guess first things first is I need to sort myself.  Who am I kidding, I rarely do that, I have an idea and just do it, and have another, and maybe add that in as well.....but I think Vikki's idea of sorting it first, maybe make a rough draft, give it a little air, and then let it go into the world is such a great idea, I think I may try and invoke that into my idea pursuing!  Baby Steps!

I love her thought that there is strength and beauty in the overcoming of our insecurities and sharing what is BORN from our SOUL.  WOW, that is so true, such a wonderful observation.  It takes strength to share your gifts, it does, so let's recognize that, celebrate it.

How about the suggestion of reducing our expectations of what will happen when we put ourselves out there?  Seriously what a relief that would be too!  When you post something on social media, how about we don't check back every so often to see how many likes we are getting, and if we do check, don't get disappointed that there are only 3 people that like it....let those expectations go....share because you HAVE to, and keep your focus on that, and it will all come.

I also love the thought of ideas being orphans and that if we don't take them they'll go on to others, which is good and fine, but when we do take them in, do all you can with them, and then you'll feel at peace with it, and you can call it done.

We all want our gifts that we share to be well received, completely perfectly planned, amazing, and so on.  So work hard to get them ready, however don't sit on them for so long working towards an idea of perfection that will never come.  At some point be OK with letting them go into the world.

And finally can we all agree that the way others see us putting ourselves out there is NOT how we see ourselves?  We all encourage and support our friends and family as they put themselves out there, we say YES, YOU GO! Why hasn't she done this sooner?!?  YOU ROCK! All of the good stuff.  But to ourselves we say, are you sure you can do it?  What if it fails? what is people don't like it?!  Let's talk to ourselves like we are our best friend.  Big Risks, let's take them.

Thanks Vikki for ALL your great wisdom.  Another fun chat in the books.

Now go be creative!

Day 23: Putting Yourself Out There with Jennifer Henson

Howdy!

It's Tuesday and already feels like it should be Friday! So I want to share a really fun chat I had with Jennifer Henson whose excitement for her new Putting Yourself Out There moment is contagious, really it is. Jennifer is a self taught mixed media artist who loves to get her hands dirty. She loves to create art of all kinds, painting, sewing, & journaling to name a few. She recently has decided to start adding classes to show others that they can create too. Find Jennifer on IG @jennhensondesigns and on her etsy Shop HERE

Take a listen to our chat and get ready to get excited about life!

Putting Yourself Out There with Jennifer Henson from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Do you have a wall up? Do you have hurdles blocking your way? One day, hopefully one day soon, those walls and hurdles will come down. Will you take that first step and be the reason they come down consciously? Will it be nudges and pushes from friends and family that will push you out there? Or will it just be you wake up one day like Jenn did and the Dam breaks and you FREE yourself to put yourself out there and you will be ready?! Whichever the case there are things to do while you are waiting for those things to happen.

Make your goals. Write them down. Break them down into steps, baby steps, or just regular ol' adult steps. These will help you start to realize that these steps can be manageable, they can be a little less daunting than you might have thought, and maybe, just maybe, you'll take that first one.

And if your hurdles are something a grade school friend, a high school teacher or someone you don't even speak to anymore told you once YEARS ago, let's just agree to burn that. Write it down on a piece of paper, and light it up....it serves you no purpose any longer. (do so in a non-burn-your-house-down way please with a fire extinguisher nearby ;)

Jenn I wish you all the luck with your new classes, your students will love you and your enthusiasm, I don't think anything can stop you now!! SO WATCH HER NOW HIGH SCHOOL ART TEACHER!!

Now go be creative!

Day 22: Putting Yourself Out There with Ivy Newport

Happy Monday Everyone!!

So today's lesson is that Putting Yourself Out There is that it is sometimes messy, sometimes it doesn't come across exactly how you envisioned it, and sometimes technology is not your friend.  After I finally got today's video to upload after 4-5 hours on our slow as molasses upload speed out here, I started re-watching so I could take my daily notes.  To say I was disappointed would be an understatement, so sad a tech glitch would take away from the message that my special guest has to share.  The recorder picked up some feedback as Ivy was sharing her story so it is a bit hard to listen to when you hear her voice doubled a bit.  I REALLY hope you will hang with us through this video and listen to our chat.  She has such great bits of wisdom and a great message to share. It does improve some towards the middle/end.

Lesson learned - I may need my chatters to wear headsets....will keep striving to improve the outcomes for you all!!  Also when something doesn't go right, just keep trying, keeping learning and keep Putting Yourself Out There.

Ok now let's get to the good stuff...

Ivy is a published artist, art instructor and creative guide. Her online collection of artistic workshops have served thousands of students internationally and she prides herself on giving devoted care and support to her student body.

She spent most of her childhood growing up in Sydney, Australia and received private art education from a well known Australian artist as a young girl of 8 until her family was relocated to America when she was 16. She went on to finish high school in Connecticut and attended the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, receiving her BFA in Illustration.

After graduating she relocated to Austin, Texas where she was employed to create and implement an elaborate art education program at a local Montessori school. Life then took her to New York City, where she was employed by the Whitney Museum of Art working in the President’s office and assisting both the President and the museum’s Trustees. Finally a move to Portland, Oregon led her into the interior design business as a design assistant. A few years later, she owned and operated her own successful Interior Design company.

She left this fast paced role to become a mother to her two girls. While at home, Ivy engrossed herself in creative discovery and began to passionately shoot photography and author a blog. These endeavors ultimately led her to the online creative community - which inspired a fruitful and gratifying career as an Art Instructor - teaching both online and in person. Her domestic and international workshops offer rich and expansive creative experiences, with a focus on personal growth and renewal.

Ivy’s artistic message is to guide others to their creativity and nurture those special gifts in each of us. She strongly believes that every soul is creative and finding ways to express that creativity is paramount to joy and healing.

She has been published in several magazines including, Somerset Apprentice, Somerset Digital Studio, and Artful Blogging.

You can find Ivy at her website HERE
Also follow her FB page HERE
On IG @ivynewport

Come take a listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Ivy Newport from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Do you feel something brewing in you?  Are you ready to be vulnerable, take a chance and follow your heart?  You don't need a GRAND Plan, no huge event needs to take place, just take a step, just one, and then another.  You will experience a much richer life as Ivy has by taking those steps.

If you start down a path, taking those steps, and you decide along the way that you want to take a turn, move in a new direction, it is OK!!  Don't shame yourself that you didn't follow through, or that you didn't succeed.  This isn't necessarily a linear path, they will be turns and twists along the way.  Just be sure you consider why you are making those turns, and feel good it is because you are really being pulled in a direction that follows your heart, NOT because you are scared or afraid to continue on your path.

You may be surprise when you put yourself out there that it is easier that you thought, or the feeling you'll have after you do it will be of great joy not only relief!

I hope you made it through the video, Ivy had such great wisdom to share!  I appreciate you dealing with the "tech" issues I had with the sound!! xoxo  Sometime putting yourself out there is messy, but surround yourself with support people and you will learn and keep going!!

Now go be creative!

Day 21: Putting Yourself Out There with Stephanie Jones Rubiano

Hope you all had a great weekend!

To cap off the weekend I want to share with you a fun chat I had with Stephanie Jones Rubiano.

Stephanie Jones Rubiano is a native Austinite who graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M at Galveston with a Bachelors of Science in Marine Biology. She worked as an environmental scientist for a major drilling company in Houston, TX, for five years after that. Therefore, it stands to reason that she has now chosen art as her career path. She is a mixed media artist who creates dimensional works within shadow boxes using a variety of uncommon objects. Her love of nature and fascination with Victorian photography is apparent through her combination of antique photographs and real butterfly or moth wings. Bits of text illustrate her irreverence for straight-laced Victorian society and lend a whimsical air to her pieces.

Stephanie teaches workshops at national art retreats as well as in her home studio. She has had Butterfly Boxes and work in past mediums shown in galleries and boutiques across the United States. In October of 2008 she participated in her first nationally-ranked art festival, the Bayou City Art Festival in Houston, TX, and placed 2nd overall out of 300 national artists. Her work has graced the covers of magazines and books, as well as been the subject of articles and how-to projects. Stephanie lives with her daughter, husband, two cats and a variety of backyard critters in Austin, TX.

You can find her over on her website Www.stephanierubiano.com  She has a new online course coming soon so keep an eye out for that!!

Come listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Stephanie Jones Rubiano & Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

In talking about putting yourself out there it may be good to note that we aren't just talking to extroverts, you don't have to want to be on stage or sign out loud in front of a crowd.  Even introverts want to, need to share their talents and passions and Stephanie is a perfect example of how an introvert can overcome her fears and put themselves out there.

You never know where your connections will come from or who they will be with so it's important to constantly be putting yourself out there.  Keep sharing repetitively and it will happen.  Creativity especially is subjective, so you will need to find your people.  Be an eternal optimist, if it doesn't happen today, maybe tomorrow!  It's important to develop a thick skin as well.  It is natural to want to retreat under the covers when you hear a no, or get rejected.  Dust yourself off and keep going.  Find your inner GRIT, the ability to get up again and again is key!

Take Stephanie's advice and Just Do It!  Take a deep breath and jump in!  Thanks Stephanie for sharing your story!!

Now go be creative!!
