My One Little Word - Word of the Year : LEARN

Hi -

Have you all picked your Word of the Year, or One Little Word??  Some of you probably started this process at the end of last year and got started Jan 1 right? Or are you with me in feeling I'm behind in getting this year started?  Feb 1 is feeling more reasonable to kick off the year for me.

I did choose LEARN as my word.  There are so many things I want to learn and all that is stopping me is not taking the first step and doing it.  I figured I'd make a list of all my online courses I still have access to and pick one to get started on.

However as the year began I felt compelled to turn LEARN a bit on its side and incorporate in TEACH.  I was having so much FUN with my zipper pouches and others were commenting they wished they knew how to make them too.  So I decided to create the Zipper Pouch 101 online course.  I didn't realize how much I would truly LOVE seeing all my sewing students' completed pouches and the "in process" pictures they are sharing!  So proud and filled with admiration for those who even while scared, picked up their zippers and started sewing!  They did it!!  I haven't had one person yet FAIL, and I don't think I will. You can join us in this fun easy to follow video class by purchasing the class HERE!  Check out all the fun vintage kits too!

I still am focused on my word LEARN, however I think it will be cuddling up with TEACH hand in hand for the year.  I will be sharing opportunities for you all to LEARN too!

I have enjoyed seeing the Special Word Cuffs that people have made from my Brave Girls' University course, and have decided I'll be posting a new course soon.  The course will be a manageable sewing course that you can enjoy learning one Quilt Block a month for the year!  At the end of the year you will have a wonderful Sampler Quilt to put together and have quilted.  Throughout the year if you love one block I'll show you how you can create an entire quilt with that one block.  Anyone out there that has a desire to create their own quilt to pass down through generations, but never believed they could, this course will be for you!!

This is the first block I'll be teaching!  It's called the Jacob's Ladder block.  A classic.

I'll be announcing the roll-out soon!  If you are already a BGU member, YAY!!  If not, click on this picture below to sign - up!

I will receive credit for your use of my link, and your friends, so thank you thank you, this helps me keep offering courses such as these!!

There is still time to sign up for Handmade U - Spring Semester May 4-6!  We'll be Stitching away in the Red Barn!  Come join us!  Click HERE to register!

Hoping you are staying COZY this Winter!  xoxo, Rachel

Day 30: Putting Yourself Out There with Melody Ross

I'm excited to share our last Putting Yourself Out There Conversation today.

Melody Ross has been putting herself out there for years.  She has used her life experiences to develop tools and courses that have been life changing for her, and thousand of other women. Melody is co-founder of Brave Girls Club. She has some exciting new things happening over there at BGC. Soul Restoration, their flagship class is being rebooted and begins Sept 7th. It is going to be so good, this is soul work, it's been so life-changing for me, and thousands of others. If you are feeling called to take it, it will be available on Brave Girls' University, you can sign up through my link below! You won't regret it, I promise you if you put in the effort you'll find amazing things on the other side.

Come take a listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Melody Ross from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

So there were so many things to take to heart!  Consider how much you care about what people think of you, and how is that affecting the way you put yourself out there?  How can this not be a blocker to you being you?  As Melody said, it's an evolution and over time that feeling of caring too much can change.  Think about small steps you can make to let some of that go.

Think about your why, why do you want to put yourself out there, what do you have to share and is it worth doing?

It's ok if people don't like what you are doing, or even don't like you.  As Melody reminded us, there are 3 billion women in the world!!  If a few aren't your Cup of Tea find a few others!  Thanks Melody, that is a great reminder and helps put things in perspective.

We talked a lot about the mean people, the haters, and I think this is a great conversation to end on wrapping up what to do about those people, and the fears of this happening to you.  We've said it before and Melody confirms, expect these things to happen in some way or another.  It will help you not be blindsided, and you can remember why you are doing what you are, and who is always supporting you no matter what.

I can't wait for Melody to create the When in Doubt class - what a great idea to have a whole book of those reminders.  In the meantime a few of those ideas will be included in the companion course for these conversations.  Who are those that support you most?  Why do you want to put yourself out there, and what goals are you heading towards?  Remembering those things will keep you going when you stumble or run into one of those mean people.

As Melody said, we are REAL People, we ALL have feelings.  Let's be KIND to each other as we all navigate how we are putting ourselves out there.  When we run across someone that isn't our cup of tea, just move on, when we see someone we care about needing support or constructive criticism, let's do it lovingly.

And I'll leave you with what Melody suggests.  You have the medicine that someone else needs.  You do.

Now go be creative!

Rachel

Day 18 : Putting Yourself Out There with Joanne Sharpe

Hello Friends!

Today is a really fun chat with Joanne Sharpe.  I've admired her doodling artwork for sometime so it was a special treat to "meet" her and chat about Putting Yourself Out There, she's done it and continues to every day!

“Whimsical art maker” Joanne Sharpe is a colorful mixed media artist and enthusiastic teacher with a passion for art journaling, lettering, doodling and illustration. Joanne’s playful art has been featured in the popular publications Cloth Paper Scissors, Studios, Somerset Studio, Somerset Art Journaling and Somerset Apprentice magazines. In addition to teaching nationwide, she has been licensing artwork to the craft, fabric and giftware markets for two decades. Joanne resides in Rochester, New York.

You can find Joanne on her website www.joannesharpe.com
on IG @joannesharpe

Be sure to check out her new book, it looks amazing, it's on my wish list!

Or this one looks great too!

Come listen to our chat!

Putting Yourself Out There with Joanne Sharpe & Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

I took a full page of notes again on this chat!  So much good stuff from Joanne.  I loved the idea of Putting Yourself Out There as a leadership role.  Think of yourself as a leader in whatever it is you want to share, and know you are sharing to help others.

Also I agree with Joanne in sharing what you would want to learn, seen, experience etc.  Putting your own spin on things will help create authenticity and will bring to you a community of like-minded people.  I started Handmade U because I wanted to learn something specific, and I wanted the weekend to unfold the way I wanted to spend a weekend gathering with friends, enjoying art-making in a relaxed atmosphere and I wanted to eat good food ;)

Keep in mind not everyone will love what you are putting out there, but plenty of people will.  Be ready to put in the work, be prepared, and show that you know what you are doing (even if maybe you don't quite know yet!)

I need to start a Love Notes folder like Joanne did.  What a fun way to be able to go back to those supporters comments when you are having a hard day, or someone gives some bad feedback, it will be such an encouragement to have that folder of goodness!

Take Joanne's advice and Be Brave, Just Do It, what's gonna happen?  Look at it Half Full - people could really really love you!  Put your BEST Self Out there!

Thanks again to Joanne for such a fun chat!  I enjoyed it so much.

Now go be creative!!

Day 17: Putting Yourself Out There with Molly Meng

We are at the mid-week point people!  I hope it's going well!!  Today's chat should brighten your day and add some enthusiasm into your life!

Molly Meng is an Artist, Teacher, and Storyteller as well as designer/ owner of the greeting card business, 8mm Ideas.

She is a collector of the weird and wonderful and has a studio full of the unimaginable.
Her work is inspired by vintage ephemera and the potential history that exists within these random items.

>From gallery shows to large-scale or personal commissions , Molly creates "fictional history" pieces of artwork to fit every emotion.

She keeps a studio in downtown Los Angeles with friend and fellow creative, Robert Mahar, and teaches workshops there, as well as around the U.S. and France.

Molly has been partnering, for the last 20 years, with her sister, Kaari Meng of French General, several times a year to host creative retreats.

She also has a great love of performing and has recently started to take her show on the road, telling stories to live audiences.

Recently, Molly walked into her local Post Office and saw a way to bring more love to the institution!
She asked about creating rotating displays in the empty cases and the idea was heartily welcomed!
The first of the displays are in the Atwater, CA post office at the time of this writing.  More to come...

You can view Molly's Creative Live teaching videos through their website, https://www.creativelive.com/instructor/molly-meng

Come take a listen to our chat:

Putting Yourself Out There with Molly Meng and Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Doesn't listening to Molly just get you excited?  Her enthusiasm for life is really infectious!  I love hearing that even really outgoing people who don't mind walking up to those strangers, or friends you just haven't met yet, also have things that make them nervous too!  Selling your own stuff, whether it be artwork, or whatever it is you make or do, is scary and tough!  But take Molly's lead and keep going to that next place, that next person until you start getting those yes's.  They will come when you find your audience, when you find your people!  Believing in what you are doing, knowing you are doing good things will help keep you going!

I also love the comment Molly had that people don't know you or care until you introduce yourself and let them know what you are interested in.  Isn't that the truth?  Of course people don't know you or care until they know you and care!!  DUH!  Why don't we know this and understand it all the time?? Let's remind ourselves of this so we can move beyond the fear and put ourselves out there so people can start to know us!  So we can be seen!

I also love that thought Molly shares and embodies, that Enthusiasm helps every situation.  Even if you are nervous or fumble your words, if you go in with enthusiasm it will help carry you!  People will see the enthusiasm and hopefully will join in!

Acknowledgment is what a lot of us are looking for, and we can start to get that by acknowledging others.  People like to be noticed, notice them and make connections.

Build yourself a community around what you are doing.  Bite off what you can chew and get going!!

Thanks Molly!!  Enjoyed chatting as always!!

Day 16: Putting Yourself Out There With Erin Faith Allen

Hi Everyone!

Today I'm working on lots of projects around the homestead, Handmade U prep is in full swing, I've asked the Barn kitties to start sweeping up and cleaning all the cobwebs, but I don't think they are too game on that.    We had a load of wood delivered, so we are all set for the Smoked Pulled Pork for our goodbye dinner at Handmade U, always a fan favorite!  Can't wait.

I am sharing my conversation with Erin Faith Allen today.  I love re-listening to these conversation to take notes and really hear the conversation.  So many good bits of wisdom shared by Erin in this one.

You can find Erin on her website HERE!
In her words "Making art helps me process my existence with it’s richly cascading and intertwining sounds, textures, and colors.

I incorporate mythology, symbolism, and anatomy with multiple layers of mixed media technique and materials to express my perception of the world … sometimes light and delicate, sometimes overwhelming and intense.

My art carries themes of ancestral lineage, mothering, collective female experience, traumatic memory, and the choice each day presents:  do we exist solely within our personal tragedies or do we weave life from a place of empowered wisdom?

In my artwork lies the dance between these choices; the spectrum of living includes both.

We must know our depths to know our heights: we must howl in wild stark exposure at the moon in order to know true bliss in the glow of sun."

She has released short documentary films peeking into the inner world of artists.
She teaches mixed media art workshops and organizes artist retreats in international locations.
Her online Art School has just been released and her book is out as well!  Go check out all the goodness on her website!

Take a listen to our chat and let me know what you think!

Putting Yourself Out There with Erin Faith Allen from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

TERROR!!  Is that what comes to mind for you when I say Putting Yourself Out There??  If so you certainly are not alone!  No need to take giant leaps, just take baby steps, one at a time and you will feel liberation in doing it as Erin describes.  I love the idea that keeping yourself closed off is so much worse than letting yourself come out with the real you, it may give you a moment of anxiety or yikes feeling, but after that it is FREEDOM.  It hurts more not to do it.

I also like Erin's advice about following your inner guidance.  Listen to that thump, if you have been suppressing it for a long time it might take some effort to hear it, to be moved by it, but dig deep for it.

We are here to be living examples for one another, be inspired by those around you, and let your actions of following your inner thump inspired others to connect to themselves.

Erin is so right when she shares that you will be met with people who will look you in your eyes and see you, and you will see them.

JUST DO IT!!  (Nike needs to be sponsoring this series for SURE!)

Day 15: Putting Yourself Out There with Vanessa Kiki Johanning

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  If you haven't already be sure to catch Sandy Glass and Elena Lai Etcheverry their chats were posted over the weekend.  Both are great and inspiring.

Today I need to share some COLOR, Some SMILES and Lots of FUN, so of course I want to share Vanessa Kiki Johanning once again!

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Vanessa "Kiki " Johanning is an international full time Mixed Media Artist with more than 20 years' experience who loves to find the sparkle in your eye while embellishing every surface of life!
A passionate collector of embroidered doilies, smiles, and experiences. She plays at a wonderful Imaginarium Design Studio, and is represented by several galleries in the Midwest. She is a published Trendspotter, Designer, Art Event Teacher and Inspirationalist. Everyday..looking for happy life changing moments!

Find her at her website HERE
And on IG @vanessakikijohanning

Do yourself a favor and give yourself a cheerful smile and listen in!

Putting Yourself Out There with Vanessa Kiki Johanning & Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

If you watched that and don't have a smile on your face now, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Kiki is so right in sharing that we need to set big goals, and keep setting them once you've accomplished others.  Writing it down helps so much when it comes to acknowledging what you want and then taking steps to get there.

Are you a 1 Pin person or a 12 Pin person??  I love Kiki's story about working at the bank.  It really talks to knowing who you are, and living your truth.  We aren't necessarily saying quit your job tomorrow if it doesn't fit who you are exactly, but consider taking steps to move in a different direction, OR fill your non-work life with things that will FILL up your soul of who you are.

I always did well in math and studied actuarial science, so my jobs after college centered around numbers, finance, actuarial work.  I started scrapbooking years ago and was a Scrapbook consultant hosting workshops and retreats to really FILL that side of me.  It was what I decided to do to not give up the day job so to speak, but still be true to what I enjoyed.

Also I love that Kiki's friends realized who she was when she was making these changes, they thought it was just her being normal!  I bet your friends would feel the same way, they know you and love you, they want you to be the true YOU.

Take Kiki's advice - this is your one time, just do it, have fun!  The Fun Police will not come by and tell you you are doing it wrong!

So go grab some pinwheels and make some giggles.

Thanks KIKI!!

Now go be creative,

Rachel

Day 14: Putting Yourself Out There with Elena Lai Etcheverry

I hope today finds you enjoying a bit of rest before Monday comes!  I want to share with you a conversation I had with Elena Lai Etcherverry where she really puts herself out there.  Thanks Elena.

Elena is the Founder and Executive Director Charity Wings a non profit Art & Craft Center based in San Marcos, California. Their mission is to be an inspiring place for people of all ages to Gather, Give Back and Create. She brings people and organizations together to offer free or low cost creativity sessions to other charities.  She is a Mixed Media Artist and writer and loves a good pair of wings.

Find her over on Facebook @CharityWingsArtCenter
IG @elenalaietcheverry

Listen to our chat here:

Putting Yourself Out There with Elena Lai Etcheverry and Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

One thing to keep in mind in whatever direction people around us are putting themselves out there is that every person's journey is different.  Just because we know one person with infertility doesn't mean we know exactly what another is going through.  Same goes for any journey, perhaps you have an artist friend who create beautiful paintings, their journey in putting themselves out there might be wanting to find a studio that would show her work, where as another friend might want to license her work for home decor.  We each have a path that we follow in which the timing is unique, the challenges are unique, and the end goals are unique as well.

It is important that we know how we can support our friends and family in their pursuits.  It is as simple as asking, how can I support you?  What might help encourage you?  This conveys a desire to support as well as understand what your friends need.  That can be the best feeling of all.

As we decide how we are putting ourselves out there with our goals we need to understand what we REALLY REALLY want as Elena mentioned.  Once we know that the desire to take action will kick in.  It won't always be easy, doing nothing will most likely be much easier, however in the end what will make you most happy?  Doing nothing and ending up without your goal, or working hard, going through what you have to go through to end up with your goal.

Surround yourself with positive, supportive people.  Do what's in your heart.  Sharing your gifts or story is selfish and selfless as Elena said.  You'll receive support and connect with others who resonate with your story, and in return you give people the knowledge that they aren't alone and perhaps will learn from what you share.

We aren't alone.  Let's find each other.

Now Go Be Creative....

Hugs,
Rachel

Day 13: Putting Yourself Out There with Sandy Glass

Hope your weekend is going great!  It's a sunny day out on the Homestead, I'm chipping away at the  weeds that have gotten out of hand!!!  For a little treat after our yard work, I'm baking some banana bread, hoping that helps us forget about a few achey bones later!

Today's conversation comes from our favorite Miamian, Sandy Glass once again.  Sandy is the brain behind Crafty Brains, living in Miami with her husband and two kiddos.  Sandy teaches classes in English and Spanish in her home, and has a new class on Brave Girl University.  Sandy is also a Certified Soul Restoration instructor for Brave Girls Club.  You can find her on IG @craftybrains.

Sandy's class on Brave Girls University is a fun and simple to make project to personalize your sun hat! Super cute! I can't wait to see what people make! I could really have used one this morning while weeding! I think I'll order one and add some personalization, now to think what I should say on the brim!

Putting Yourself Out There with Sandy Glass and Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

I think we can all relate to Sandy when she shared that in the beginning before she put herself out there she was being creative for herself, to decorate her home for her family, and wasn't thinking that anyone else would be interested in what she was making.  Luckily for us, a friend encouraged her to share what she was doing, and thus sent her down a road of creating, sharing, inspiring and teaching.

We really do share a glimpse into our lives and who we are if we are sharing what we are doing in a honest and authentic way on the internet.  We can build meaningful connections when we do this and create a community of like-minded peeps.

So don't be afraid of failing, what is the worst that can happen?  Move through your insecurities and FACE THE WORLD!  You never know what wonderful things wait on the other side!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Now Go Be Creative....

Hugs,
Rachel

Day 11 : Putting Yourself Out There with Anna Oginsky

Hi Everyone!

I hope your week is going great.  Today it is HOT and humid at the McGough Homestead, so Cora and I are checking on the barn kitties and chickens an extra time or two.  We are excited to have Fall right around the corner (hopefully)!

What I am also excited about is to bring Anna Oginsky back onto the blog today for another Handmade U Conversation chatting about this month's topic of putting yourself out there.

Anna is a happily married mom of 3.  She is a writer, loves to make art, teach classes and lead retreats in Michigan, where she lives with her family and their big yellow lab. She also just published her first book! Anna loves the intersection of creativity and community. ❤

Take a listen to her thoughts on PYOT!

Putting Yourself Out there with Anna Oginsky & Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

So we all put ourselves out there don't we?  Each day we do little things that are outside our comfort zone?  Whether sharing an opinion or maybe something you've created?  Are you like Anna who used to think it's already been said before, or what you have to offer might not be good enough??

Are you going to wait until you are just bursting with something to share?  Wait until you are so stuck that you have to let it out to get things flowing again?  Or will you just put it out there?  Get unstuck, let it flow like a river as Anna put it!  Try it!  You really won't know until you do.

Watch those around you and see how they are putting themselves out there, do you notice anything horrible and tragic happening to them when they post a picture of their artwork, or share a thought on FB or maybe a blog?  They are living through it right??  Don't you think it could be the same for you?

As Anna mentioned, in general, people like to see people doing things that make them happy.  You will find a community that will rally around you and support you!  Expect some people might not like it, but that is why you will have a community that will, they'll be there to back you up and turn to if you would ever get feedback that isn't constructive.

Open yourself up to more space to create new things, and let what you have now go on an adventure like Anna said!  Don't babysit it, let it go and see where it takes itself!

Thanks Anna for all your great wisdom!!
