Day 31: Cultivating Creativity Wrap Up and Project to Move Forward

Hi Everyone!

First of all THANK YOU!  Thanks to all of you who clicked on over here and listened in on one or hopefully ALL of the conversations.  Thanks and a Big Hug to all the women that agreed to #1 learn how to Skype ;), #2 find the place in their homes that the wi-fi was the best to Skype, and most importantly #3 Chat with me about Creativity!

Little did I know when I got the wild idea to start chatting with some friends on Skype and sharing the conversations with the Handmade U Tribe did I think it would turn out to be such an inspiring project for me, and by the sweet messages I have received from some of you, it appears that you were inspired by these women too!  They all shared such great advice and thoughts didn't they??  My hope is that your mind was expanded, stretched, and broadened on what Being Creative means.  Are you on board that we are ALL Creative?  That we ALL have gifts we can use to bring Creativity into our days?

Have you sat yourself down and really had a heart to heart that you DO have the time to be Creative if you broaden that definition and make better choices with your precious time?

Have you flipped the script on being held to a standard of perfection that is out of reach for anyone and realized that enjoying the process of being Creative is all you need to do, no matter what the outcome?

Have you turned Comparison on its head and realized we should be inspired by others work and use it for good?  To let it push us to create our own projects with our own style, because do we really want everything on Instagram or in the world to look and be the same?  Wouldn't it be great to share our work and have people know it is ours without them even seeing our names on it?

You are Deserving, You are Enough, so Allow yourself the time to be Creative.  Let yourself enjoy the process, know that mistakes will happen, and it will be OK!  More than likely it'll be better than OK when you learn from those mistakes and try again, and maybe even again, it'll give it all texture, and isn't that what Life is about??

Here are a few of my wrap-up thoughts on the month of conversations!

July Cultivating Creativity Recap with Handmade U from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

If you have been inspired by this month and don't want to let it end I am creating a fun little class for you to take, more on that in the coming days!

Oh and don't think we won't be continuing with more Conversations!  Tomorrow will be a whole new topic.  This topic turned out to be much broader, one that really opens it up to talking about all kinds of stories from more amazing women.  You certainly don't want to miss August on the blog.  Stop by tomorrow and hear ALL about it!!

Now Go and Be Creative!

Day 25: Cultivating Creativity with Jennifer Allred

Welcome another Nebraskan to the conversations on Cultivating Creativity!  MY sweet friend Jennifer Allred is a Mom of 3 boys, so you'll find her on the Baseball Field more often than not!  She is also mom to Gracie Allred, our puppy Cora McGough's sister.  She is an avid stitcher, and owner of The Turquoise Tomato that offer beautiful Leather Cuffs.  Her stitching skills earned her a spot on the Handmade U Stitch Team as well!!

Find Jen on IG @theturquoisetomato and @jenniferallred

We chat about Seasons of Life and what that means to creativity, and how we can fit in tiny bits of time to create something that will remind of us of that season we were in while we created it.

My kitty BOLT makes a special appearance at the end too ;)

It's a good one:

So are we all going to go shopping on Etsy and support our favorite makers?  I'm thinking a fun handmade item might be in order!  Thanks Jen ;)

I decided to reopen my ShopHandmadeU Etsy store with some Quitdori's,  Quilted Heart Planner Clips and some beaded bracelets.  Special Word Cuffs might be going up today too in my Etsy shop HERE.

What are your favorite Etsy shops with Handmade goodies??

Cheers,

Rachel

Day 17: Cultivating Creativity with Julie Avery

Happy Sunday!

I hope you are all having some relaxing time today with family or friends. I made a quick visit to my favorite little shop in Lincoln, NE, Simply Bungalow and picked up an old Reader's Digest book that had a super cute cover. I have ideas racing around in my head on how I can make an Idea Book from it....stay tuned to see what I come up with.

I'm also now watching the skies, wondering if they are about to open up and give some relief from the mugginess and water the yard for us!

Today I have a special treat for you! I reached out to someone I had never met before on Instagram, Julie Avery, to see if maybe she'd join in on our Cultivating Creativity Challenge for July. I had fallen in love with the beautiful colors in her feed and the fun crafty goodies she sells in her shop Lemony Stitch! She is as colorful of a personality as she is in her shop! Come take a listen after Julie introduces herself to you:

Hello Hello! I'm Julie Avery. I am a maker. I love all things crafty and pretty. I'm obsessed with lemons and sunshine and secretly wish I could pull off wearing rainbows everyday. Color and all things happy are my jam! I'm the owner/creator of Lemony Stitch - crafty business where I specialize in fun fabric things such as banners and lemony stitch washi. I'm a huge fan of supporting other makers - the handmade community is an amazing place to share and cultivate ideas and friendships - lift each other and love life! My laundry is always overflowing. I love house plants. I don't know how to text without emoijis. I have 4 children (2,4,8,10) and a very busy and supportive husband. I aspire to be a blogger and motivational speaker. I'm a Mormon. I currently serve in my church as a teacher over the woman. I love to pray. I seek to inspire others to be happy, lift each other and enjoy this beautiful life we've been given.

Cultivating Creativity with Julie Avery from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

I can relate to Julie in a number of ways. First being in a creative business I think people sometimes think all we do is creative work. Though we may make creative products we certainly have lots of business-y work to do as well. Buying supplies, doing taxes, loading products onto our websites, organizing projects, etc. Also being in a creative business gives way to coming up with not only lots of ideas we may want to try for ourselves, but also ideas that we can apply to our business. When you are being creative for work that typically moves to the top of the list vs perhaps an idea I just want to do for myself. It is a challenge to force ourselves to add in time just for you.

I love how Julie mentioned that involving your family is so important. Even though you might be the only one who sews in the family, think of ways that you can involve your spouse or kids. Whether it be decisions on fabric choices, or a pattern, having their input or even help will make the projects and creative time more meaningful and fun!  It also inspires your family members to be creative too in their own ways when you have projects you enjoy working on.

Thanks to Julie and her kids ;) for joining us today. Go check out her fun fabric Washi Tape and all the inspiration over on her IG!

Thanks too for all your notes and words of encouragement on the July Challenge!  I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying the series!  There may be a new topic in the works for August!!

Be sure to sign up for the Handmade U Tribe Newsletter!  More to come on that soon!

Have a wonderful week!!

xoxo

Day 14 - Cultivating Creativity with Melsha Shea

Hi Everyone!  We are nearly half way through the month!  Do you feel yourself getting inspired?  I hope you are looking at the things around you and seeing more beauty and more ideas in your day to day life!

Today's interview is with my good friend Melsha Shea!  She is coming to us from Alberta Canada.  Melsha hosts Shift Events, teaches on Brave Girls University with me, and is a Certified Soul Restoration Instructor for Brave Girls.  You'll be able to take all sorts of classes from her coming soon so get on her Shift List for more info!  You can find her on her website HERE, or on IG @melshashea

Listen in to our chat!

Day 14: Cultivating Creativity with Melsha Shea from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Who is up to try something that you may have been scared to do in July??  I'm not necessarily recommending Sky diving, although if you want to get creative with your adrenaline producing activities that might be a good one, but trying a new thing in your daily life that your a bit nervous about.  Perhaps it is Hot Yoga, or Zumba, or pulling out a blank canvas with a handful of different art supplies and seeing what happens!  Try it, and maybe you'll find it wasn't so scary after all!!

We'll watch for Melsha's canvas at #cultivatingcreativity  , thanks Melsha!!

What are the things that you find you are gifted at doing?  Are you a gifted baker?  gifted seamstress? gifted hostess?  Artist? gardener?  Tune into yourself and really think about those things.  Those are the things to highlight and grow into!  It will bring you great joy!

Hugs,
Rach

Day 13: Cultivating Creativity with Jennifer Hayslip

Hi Everyone!  It's the 13th Day of our Cultivating Creativity July Challenge and each day I am feeling more and more inspired by these women I am chatting with.  Not only do each have such wonderful thoughts and tips for us, but I love how the thread is shown through each of the conversations that we all have the same struggles with keeping our creativity up and in the forefront of our days.

Today's conversation is no exception.  I am excited to share my conversation with the beautiful and talented Jennifer Hayslip coming to us from Georgia.

Jennifer Hayslip can be described as modern day Renaissance woman who has crafted a life that she loves as a mixed media artist, photographer and event planner. Her mixed media work is best described as whimsical and fancy.

She has a colorful palette of things she enjoys. From decorating, styling, photography, and vintage collectables. Her detailed eye, love for styling, and decorating has rewarded her with editorial features of her home, art, and workshop events in publications worldwide.

I was lucky enough to attend one of her fabulous event in Savannah, Georgia maybe 6 or 7 years ago.  It was beautifully planned and the decor was certainly whimsical and fancy!  Such a treat.

Listen in and let us know if you are raising your hand too when we talk about how we have tendencies of Multi-Potentialites!

Cultivating Creativity with Jennifer Hayslip from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Here is a website I found on Multi-Potentialites - read about it here!

I think this is the Ted talk that Jennifer mentioned to me about the topic as well.  HERE.  I'm going to go take a listen in.

Are you finding you have too many interests?  Too many things on your list and you just get stuck with not knowing what to start with?  Take some time tonight to review that list if you have one, if you don't write all your ideas down.  Keep a notebook or journal handy to keep a running list of all the ideas that pop into your head!  Then as Jennifer mentioned during our chat, Prioritize!  Pick one or two things that you'd like to accomplish or start this week and stick with those things!

We know when that shiny little thing in the corner of your house or a fluffy white bunny runs by we might just get a bit distracted, but trying to focus on your priorities will really help for you to accomplish something!

Be Creative!

Day 12: Cultivating Creativity with Becky Rourk

Hello Everyone and I hope to catch you still on Day 12!

I did a quick day trip today out of town to see my husband in action for his job and support him so I hadn't gotten a video prepared for the day!  When I got home I thought I might have to get creative again with some other type of Creativity Tip for you, but I completely LUCKED out and found sweet Becky Rourk online and she was willing to download Skype on her phone and jump on a conversation on her way to bed!  How is that for being a team player in Creativity?!?  Thanks so much Becky!  You saved me ;)

Becky Rourk is a copywriter, producer and loves to entertain.  You can find her on IG @rrebeck61

Take a quick listen to our late-night chat and forgive the bad lighting ;)

Cultivating Creativity with Becky Rourk from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Thanks to Becky for her great tips!  I completely agree with the gather some girlfriends together to have some creative time.  Not only will it be a fun chance to catch up with the gals but you'll inspire each other.  Bellinis aren't a bad idea either.

I also appreciate Becky's thoughts on going into her art studio and just touching some of her fun supplies.  Even if you have a bag or a box of supplies in the back of a closet, when you want to get inspired, OR if you are too tired to create, but still want to try to be creative, just surround yourself with some supplies and look at them.  Sometimes just holding and leafing through some of your fabrics, or colored pencils will get you in right frame of mind to be creative.  If it doesn't actually get you started on something, it'll get you thinking about it, which is creative in of itself!!

Here is hoping you gather your girls and get some creative sparks flying!!

Hugs,
Rach

Day 11 - Cultivating Creativity with Jen Osborn

Hi All!  I hope you had a great Day 11 and were really creative today!

I had a Creative Day if I expand my definition of Creative as you'll learn more about in the wonderful conversation I had with our Guest Instructor for the Fall Semester of Handmade U - Jen Osborn today.  We chatted and chatted, so much so the video is nearly too big for our slow country internet.  So fingers crossed our speed picks up so I can post before the end of the night!!  Jen is an artist, writer, and maker...come take a listen.

FINALLY UPLOADED YAY!! I WONT DISAPPOINT WITH NO VIDEO TODAY!

Day 11 - Cultivating Creativity with Jen Osborn from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

Thanks to Jen for joining me today even in the midst of exciting news that she and her family will be moving to a new house which looks lovely in some beautiful woods!  Can't wait to watch for more pics of it soon.

Find Jen on IG @themessynest and check out her website www.themessynest.com

Want to learn from Jen this fall?  Come join us at Handmade U! Not signed up yet??  GO HERE for details.

Remember to try her tips of having a GO BAG, Having an IDEA JOURNAL as a Junk drawer for your brain!  And keeping the creativity just around you so it is easy to pull down when you have free moments!  All great stuff, thanks JEN!
=====================================================================

So my creativity today was coming up with some fun things to share and inspire you without a special conversation in case I didn't have the video up in time, that and figuring out where to buy AC filters and replace them so our house would cool down!  Done and Done.

I also was lucky enough to have a quick Tea with my sweet friend Jennifer.  Time has flown by since the last time we had a chance to catch up!  The summer is in full swing for the both of us!

It was fun to catch up and makes me excited for the Fall Semester of Handmade U to have more time to see her and all the rest of the gals making their way to Nebraska in September.

Here are some ideas for you to try:

Have you been out on Youtube yet to find some fun tutorials to make something you've been wanting to try??

Why not try a really simple way to make some personalized notebooks to throw in your purse for your "Idea Journal" - You'll understand more of what that is meant for once you hear Jen's conversation with me!

I have a few fun tutorials on my Youtube Channel HERE, that show you simple ways to use greeting cards, postcards, etc in a fun way!

And one of the things I am missing from the Beach week is my Mother-In-Laws "Birdseed"  It is Lucky Charms, Peanuts, M&M's.  Very tasty and a fun snack while you play poker or do anything else really.

I hope to share with you tomorrow some samples of the clips we'll be making at the Fall Semester of Handmade U.  I am working out some ideas while I wait for the video to upload.  I will FINALLY be trying my laminating machine for the first - I've only owned it for a few years, so about time right?!

I'm dying to know what you all have worked on during our Creativity Challenge?  Tell me one thing!!  Remember it doesn't have to be a craft or art!  Got a good vacation snack like Birdseed?!  Please share!

Have a great night!

Hugs,
Rach

Day 10: Cultivating Creativity with Megan Hoeppner

Happy Sunday and Day 10 of our July Challenge on Cultivating Creativity!

I'm excited to see posts from you all with new recipes, new ways of cooking old favorites, racing to enter your paintings into a gallery event, sketches, doodles, colorings, etc!  I hope all the conversations so far have not only given you some fun new tips, but inspired you to think of your own!  I appreciate so much those that are sharing and joining in the conversation!

Today's conversation is with my sweet friend Megan Hoeppner.

Megan has lots going on beyond being Mom to two of the most adorable little girls.  She is:
* editor-in-chief, Scrapbook & Cards Today magazine
* Gardner Village (local shopping center) weekly blogger
* Teacher for Creating Keepsakes Events, Annie's Online Classes, Big Picture Classes, and CreativeLive
* Monthly contributor to Studio 5, a local lifestyle TV program in Utah

She shares my love of collaborating and connecting with others! That's what has her heart--people! Hearing unique stories and sharing her own unique stories. Professionally, it doesn't get much better than that for her!

Enjoy our chat:

Cultivating Creativity with Megan Hoeppner from Rachel McGough on Vimeo.

There were lots of little treasures from our chat.  I thought about how Megan was talking about those shifts in our life that change who you are, or how you feel about your life.  Whether it is for her being a newer mom, or if you are hitting a milestone age, changing jobs, etc.  Whatever the life change, you may notice a difference in how you are adding creativity to your life.  We need to keep that in mind and not get down on ourselves if we are feeling less excited about being creative, or if our focus is on other things.  I do believe even if changes in our day to day lives precludes us from creating as much as we want to, we can keep creativity in our lives, it just may just be in a different form.

Perhaps you are working tons of hours to meet deadlines, so you don't have an hour to paint, draw, or sew for instance.  Consider thinking about a fun crockpot recipe you can try in the morning before you go off for your day.  You have to eat.  You can't survive on drive thru food all week, nor should you.  If you have your hands full with taking care of kids and just don't have the time to spend on your craft, can you fit in bits of time doing something in the car while you wait to pick the kids up?  Or can you plan a craft to involve all the kids?

Your creativity will be two -fold, one being thinking outside the box on how you can fit in the creativity, and two will be finding something that works for your life, today.  Don't despair if your favorite thing is sewing and you don't have the time to sew these days.  Your days won't always be as they are today.  It will be something you can come back too when your days calm down.

Enjoy your Sunday!  Thanks again to Megan for joining us!!
xoxo

Day 2 *Comparison* - The 5 Reasons You Aren't Being Creative and How to Turn it Around

HI!

I hope you all took some time yesterday to think about Perfectionism and have decided to throw it out the window because we have another big excuse to tackle today!!  This one is similar to perfection in a way.  When we think of perfection we are thinking our project has to be the best, or whatever we think of as "perfect" - without flaw.  However, when we use this next excuse we are not necessarily thinking of perfection, but we are looking at someone else's work and thinking ours is "less than" if our project isn't as "good" or the same as another's.

*Comparison*

We all are guilty of comparison.  We may just do it once in awhile, in one facet or another in our lives, or may find ourselves doing it constantly.  Maybe shopping for jeans looking over and wishing you could buy the smaller size the gal next to you is shopping for, or maybe it's walking around your neighborhood hoping your garden will grow as perfectly as someone's down the road.  With Social Media it makes it even easier to fall into this trap.

Let's face it, most of what people post online are photos and videos of magical moments, perfectly staged and laid out photos of a beautiful project, a plate of the most delicious looking dinner, or a well-kepted and decorated corner of their home.  If we all take a moment to truly think that through, do we really believe that those people's live are that perfect?  Do we think that they live in a fairy land and that all their meals turn out to be winners?  All their projects turn out amazing?  Their homes are spotless, organized and their pets and/or kids are really well-behaved and always super clean?  NO - this simply isn't true, and why do we let ourselves think that it is?

We also don't know what is going on in other people's lives behind the curtain.  We don't know how many flopped dinners were made before that delicious non-burnt dish was plated up on that gorgeous platter that we see on Instagram.

A shot of a few items on a clean desk might mean there is a stack of bills, magazines, and scraps of fabric on the ground next to the desk {hand-raise to that one.}

{My Art Studio - What you don't see too well are the boxes stacked in the back corner full of stuff I didn't get through yet, and the other side had more boxes, and there are many boxes that were moved down the barn to a closet....oh and it stayed this clean for about 20 minutes}

So let's just stop comparing our lives in any way to others.  Let's also stop assuming just because a few photos of a project or someone's home, etc on a feed are beautiful that their lives are perfect.  I had an old friend on Facebook send me a note recently that said my life looks so simple and fun.  I had to laugh.  Fun - yes I can get with that.  Simple?  Hmmm, not so sure.  You just never know the whole story.

Also when we compare ourselves to others many times the default is, my "X" isn't as good as hers, so I am just defeated, I won't try, or I will just quit.  If you are having a hard time letting go of Comparison COMPLETELY, then at least turn it around a bit.  If you find you are a little jelly of a neighbor's garden and how weed-free and gorgeous it looks, then get yourself back to your garden and start pulling those weeds!  If you wish you could buy the smaller size of jeans that the gal next to you is shopping for, then head over to the gym!

Comparison can be turned into Inspiration.  Use the things you see in others to Inspire you to be a better YOU.  KEEP IN MIND that last bit.....  Be a better YOU!

Ok All - Sit on that one for a bit, mull it over and see if we can't let this excuse go too!

We are going to be SOOO ready to Cultivate some Creativity into our lives for the upcoming July Challenge when we let go of all these excuses!!

See you tomorrow!!

Hugs,
Rach
